Smart Meters

Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro is pleased to support the provincial goal of installing a Smart Meter in every Ontario home and small business by 2010.

Smart Meters are a key component of our commitment to create a lasting “conservation culture”.

In fact, by the end of 2010, every home and small business in the City of Cambridge and the Township of North Dumfries will have a Smart Meter.

On your Mark – Get Ready, Get Smart! The Race Begins to change all meters in 2010

January 5, 2010 marks the beginning of Cambridge and North Dumfries mass installation of Smart Meters. The installation project is expected to be completed by the end of June 2010.

In order to meet the timelines, we have partnered with Olameter Inc. Olameter Inc. is our authorized contractor to help us with the meter changes. At the present time we use the services of Olameter to read the meters for us, and they will continue to read the meters manually until we have all of the Smart Meters installed in our service territory.

Over the course of the next six months, Olameter or our crew will be working to change every meter to a Smart Meter.

A team of two Field Representatives will attend at your home or business to change the meter. The Field Representatives at Olameter Inc. will carry identification confirming they are authorized contractors for Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro.

Residents who have an outside meter do not need to be at home when the Smart Meter is installed. The Field Representatives will knock on the door, and if they can access your meter, they will proceed to change it. However, if the meter is not accessible, the contractor will leave a “Sorry We Missed You” door hanger requesting you call to book an appointment for the meter change. At the time of the meter change, you will experience a momentary power outage (approximately 5 minutes). We apologize for this inconvenience.

When your Smart Meter is being installed, you can expect to receive a package of information about Smart Meters and conservation. It will also provide information to help you understand, that for now, nothing else changes. In the future, when all Smart Meters are installed, the next step will be to introduce Time-of-Use rates. In the meantime you can learn what habits you can work on today, to help conserve energy for the future.
