LOCAL HYDRO SHINES A LIGHT ON LOCAL FOOD BANK
ENERGY SAVING LIGHTING KITS DELIVERED TO SAVE ENERGY AND LOWER HYDRO BILLS.
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. - Saving energy and saving money is top of mind for residents in Ontario. In keeping with the provincial government’s call to action for energy conservation, Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro Inc. announced another new initiative designed to help the community. Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro Inc. has started delivering energy saving kits to the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank. These energy kits with 4 energy efficient light bulbs, a booklet of tips and information on how to maximize savings, will be included in food hampers over the next four months.
John Grotheer, President of Hydro stated, “as a local community hydro we are committed to delivering conservation programs through EarthWise. EarthWise is our calling card for conservation. It includes a number of programs designed to reach out and assist all of our customers with education, programs and tools on how to save energy and equally important, to educate customers on why we need to take the first step towards energy conservation. We want to help customers reduce their hydro bills month after month. These energy kits mean the customer uses less energy and that means a lower hydro bill. ”
The Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank helps individuals and families in need by providing a variety of programs and services that encourage self-reliance. Pat Singleton, Executive Director of the Food Bank stated she was, “very pleased when EarthWise contacted her with their new conservation program, offering to include energy saving kits in the hampers distributed to those in need. Singleton believes that for some customers, the “introduction of energy efficient light bulbs and education through the local food bank will enable the recipients to actively commit to energy conservation. This is an opportunity that may not otherwise have happened. The EarthWise energy kits are a step forward and encourage self-reliance for our customers. We would love to see this initiative province wide at all food banks.”
Grotheer noted, “the energy kits include 4 compact fluorescent light bulbs for good reason. If every household in the province was to remove 4 of their most used incandescent light bulbs and replace them with 4 energy efficient bulbs, the cumulative savings could shut down one coal plant.”
A compact fluorescent bulb translates into a 75% energy savings. Grotheer noted that, “energy conservation will come naturally if each of us thinks about how we use energy and improves our habits. And it doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice comfort to be energy wise. Switching to energy efficient bulbs is a great first step”.
