GREAT REFRIGERATOR ROUNDUP RESULTS SURPASS EXPECTATIONS!

Cambridge, Ontario, Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro Inc. was instrumental in rounding up 379 energy guzzling appliances towards the 2007 provincial goal of retrieving energy- wasting refrigerators, freezers, and room air conditioners in the Great Refrigerator Roundup. This free province-wide program recently surpassed the 50,000-unit milestone.

Organized by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) to remove old, inefficient appliances, the Great Refrigerator Roundup started in June 2007, and exceeded its first-year target in December. With participation by Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro Inc. and more than 70 other local electricity distribution companies (LDCs), the program heads into year two with the promise of doing more for the environment and our power system challenges.

One of the largest programs of its type in North America, the Great Refrigerator Roundup removes appliances that are at least 10 years old - at no cost to the participant. It is estimated that for every 10-12 fridges removed, one typical Ontario home can be powered for one year. In Cambridge and North Dumfries that translates into powering up to 37 homes!

John Grotheer, President and CEO of Cambridge & North Dumfries Hydro Inc. stated he was "proud of the response by residents to save energy by pulling the plug on these old fridges, freezers and air conditioners. We have been encouraging each of our employees to act as energy ambassadors in our communities. These results are positive feedback for the team. Our role in helping customers to understand how they use energy and reduce waste is making a difference! We will continue to deliver that message".

Ontarians interested in participating in the Great Refrigerator Roundup can get complete details from the Ontario Power Authority's Every Kilowatt Counts website: www.everykilowattcounts.ca. Appointments for appliance pick-ups can be made either online or toll-free at 1-877-797-9473. The Great Refrigerator Roundup is just one of a number of conservation programs available today.
