EarthWise - Save Energy - Save Money

CAMBRIDGE, Ont. - Summer is here and it's hot! Air conditioners are getting turned on and cranked up. All that cold air can make some people hot under the collar when it comes to their energy bills!

That's where the local utility's energy conservation program "EarthWise, Saving Energy for a Brighter Future!" comes into play. John Grotheer, President of Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro says there are steps a customer can take, that won't compromise their comfort but will lead to energy savings. The first and easiest rule for saving is to "be aware" and remember to turn it off or turn it down.

5 Free Tips to Stay Cooler and Save Energy:
  1. Close blinds and drapes to keep the sunlight out. Up to 40% of the heat from the sun can be blocked by closing the drapes. Awnings and window coatings can reduce the heat entering your home by up to 75%.
  2. Use room fans or ceiling fans in place of or to supplement air conditioning.
  3. Raise the temperature on your air conditioner - then keep your thermostat set at a constant, comfort level (75 - 76 degrees) when you are home. Remember cranking that thermostat down real low won't cool your home faster.
  4. Avoid using appliances like dishwashers and clothes dryers during peak daylight hours. Remember "wait until late" - it's best to use appliances that generate heat, after 8 pm and before 8 am.
  5. Place air conditioners on the north or shady side of the house to avoid overworking the unit in the hot daytime sun. Central air conditioners use 5% more energy if they are located in the direct sun - give them some shade!
Grotheer said "energy bills rise during hot weather as customers use more electricity to cool their homes and businesses. We want to help customers learn ways to conserve energy to save dollars and to help the environment". Our job today is to deliver electricity and EarthWise energy saving tools, strategies and education."
