FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WEDNESDAY – JANUARY 4, 2006

INFORMATION UPDATE ON THE ONTARIO PRICE CREDITS ISSUED

  • Customers of Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro that paid two-step fixed prices for electricity between April 1, 2004 and March 31, 2005 will be receiving a one-time credit on their hydro bills

  • Customers can expect to see the credit, called the "Ontario Price Credit", on their hydro bill between November 05 to January 06. Remember we bill bi-monthly, so when the credit appears on your bill depends on your billing cycle

  • The credit will be displayed as a separate line called "Ontario Price Credit". The credit includes an allowance in lieu of interest and will be applied against your current or past due charges on your bill.

  • The Ministry of Energy has established regulations on how the refund will be calculated. For the average customer the Ontario Price Credit is estimated to be between $50 to $75 dollars. The Ministry report, a family in a detached home can expect a credit of approximately $60

  • Customers who lived in our service area between April 1, 2004 and March 31, 2005, but have since moved, will receive a cheque for the Ontario Price Credit if we have a forwarding address and the credit is more than $3.00. Customers have until March 31, 2006 to contact our office and provide a forwarding address.

  • The total amount available to be distributed to eligible customers in Ontario is the difference between what the Ontario Power Authority received for all of the electricity sold in the province between April 1, 2004 and March 31, 2005 and the amount the Ontario Power Authority paid to generators for the electricity supplied.

  • In 2004, the Ministry of Energy set the prices for customers on the fixed two-step pricing at 4.7 cents for the first 750-kilowatt hours used in a month and 5.5 cents per kilowatt hour for any amount used over that in a month. These rates were based on the predicted supply and demand under normal weather conditions. However, the province experienced unusually mild weather in the summer of 2004 so the actual cost of power was lower than the cost paid by consumers. This created the Ontario Price Credit to be distributed to eligible customers across the Province.

  • Customers that have further questions about the Ontario Price Credit are encouraged to contact Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro Customer Care Department 1-519-621-3484 or the Ministry of Energy at 1-888-668-4636.
