What’s the program all about?
If your home or small business has central air conditioning, here’s your chance to help reduce demand for electricity in our communities during critical summer peak-use times.
By participating in peaksaver, Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro will provide and install a peaksaver thermostat at no cost – a package valued at $400. And, just for having the peaksaver thermostat installed, you’ll receive an additional $25 – an added “thank-you” for your support!
How does the thermostat work?
Once you’ve signed up, you will need to visit our office to pick up your thermostat from our Receptionist. We will provide you with a list of local contractors that you can call to have your thermostat installed at your convenience – for no charge of course!
Once installed, if Ontario is facing an electricity shortage, we will hold an ‘event’ for that day. During an event, your home’s central air conditioning temperature will be slightly adjusted. For no more than four hours, we will gradually increase the temperature from your current program settings by a total of 2°C. At the end of the event your home’s temperature reverts back to where you originally had it set. All this happens remotely, using the paging network.

Will this save me money?
You won’t see any direct savings on your hydro bill as a result of participating in this program. There are savings though for all of us. By utilizing the peaksaver program we can avoid adding generation to meet the demand on hot summer days. This keeps the cost of electricity down, which saves us all money in the long run.
Can I install the thermostat myself?
Unfortunately the peaksaver thermostat needs to be installed by one of our qualified, trained, local HVAC contractors from the list that we provide you. That way we know it’s been properly installed, can receive communication and without that work order, we can’t issue your $25 credit.
How do I sign up?
You can register online by clicking here or come right into our office during regular hours and see our Receptionist. You’ll need to come into the office anyway to pick up your peaksaver package.
