The Appliance Calculator - It is an Energy Saving Tool

Welcome to the Appliance Calculator. This calculator has been designed to help you estimate the cost of electricity each of your appliances uses.

The first step in the EarthWise “Saving Energy for a Brighter Future” program is to understand what it costs to run the various appliances in your household or business. By reviewing the standard list of Appliances, outlined in alphabetical order, you can select which apply to you and get an idea of what it costs to operate them.

It is important to remember that the Appliance Calculator has been designed as an energy saving tool and information guide for you. We appreciate every residence and business each use a different mixture of appliances. The actual energy costs to operate your appliances could be more or less, than the model of appliance included in the Appliance Calculator, based on variables including the age of your appliance, its energy rating, the make, the model and how frequently the appliance is put to work. However, this Appliance Calculator is based on averages and should give you a good appreciation of electricity costs.

Price of Electricity in the Appliance Calculator

Based on current regulations, residential, small business and designated customers are eligible for the two block electricity pricing, known as the Regulated Price Plan (RPP).

The threshold for the two block or two step pricing changes every winter and every summer for residential customers eligible for the Regulated Price Plan.

Winter Threshold: November 1 – April 30 (6 months) First 1,000 kWh’s/month at first step price, balance at higher second step pricing.

Summer Threshold: May 1 – October 31 (6 months) First 600 kWh’s/month at first step price, balance at higher second step pricing.

The Threshold for non-residential customers eligible for the Regulated Price Plan remains constant at 750 kWh’s/month. That means that the first 750 kWh’s/month are priced at the first step price, the balance used in the month are priced at the higher second step pricing.

This Appliance Calculator calculates your cost of the appliances in your home or business, based on your profile of usage. The costs are calculated based on the two-step or two-block commodity pricing only.

Other Costs You Pay for Every Kilowatt Hour of Electricity

If you are reviewing your electricity consumption and the costs associated with a particular appliance, it is important to consider the additional costs of that electricity. All electricity customers in the province, pay an actual price for each kilowatt hour of electricity used, however there are other regulated costs associated with that electricity. These other Provincial charges include Provincial Delivery, Transformation, Regulatory and the Debt Retirement Charge.

As a rule of thumb, based on current regulations you should estimate that for every kWh of electricity you use, in addition to actual cost for electricity , it costs about another 4.0 – 5.0 cents/kWh in additional charges.

That means even greater savings if you work towards energy conservation in your home or business.
